Wait, What? You Want me to Talk about Sexuality and Developmental Disabilities?

People with I/DD want and need sexuality education to lead sexually healthy lives. Many people with disabilities believe that they have not received the education they need to have positive relationships that are enriching and not exploitive. Many talk about being in a mainstream health class and being removed when the sexuality unit began. We also know that people with I/DD are 7 times more likely to be sexually abused than someone in the general population, and they are at risk for unplanned pregnancy, sexually transmitted infection, and loneliness. We need to address this issue head-on by providing age-appropriate, medically accurate sexuality education classes and train others to discuss the topic one on one with people with I/DD. We can all become more confident and competent at addressing this issue with the people we care about, work with, or live with.
