Supporting Teens and Young Adults on the Autism Spectrum Setting and Pursuing Self-Determined Goals
This toolkit is designed to help people (e.g., parents & caregivers, teachers, siblings, service providers) who support teens and young adults on the autism spectrum as they set and pursue self-determined goals. Teens and adults on the autism spectrum may also find this toolkit helpful. This toolkit may also be beneficial to people who support individuals with a range of disabilities.
The key element of setting and pursuing self-determined goals is that the individual finds these goals important and meaningful. Examples of these goals include those related to employment, health, independence, daily living skills, relationships, and leisure, recreation and hobbies. The toolkit walks the reader through 6 steps to setting and pursuing self-determined goals: brainstorming goals, choosing goals, breaking down those goals into subgoals, taking action, tracking progress toward achieving goals, and reviewing & revising goals.
