The following presentations were delivered by Clare Papay and Meg Grigal at the 2021 Council for Exceptional Children annual convention. Descriptions are listed below, and handouts are attached. Are Research-Based Predictors of Postschool Outcomes Evident in College-Based Transition Programs? In this Data Blitz session, Clare Papay and Meg Grigal share initial results of a study from the Moving Transition Forward project. The transition experiences of youth in CBTS programs are malleable: that is, these are programmatic factors that can be changed or modified by college/university or school district partner staff to support youth to achieve successful postschool outcomes. The findings of this research highlight several ways in which CBTS programs provide strong transition programming. This information can be used by secondary special educators to advocate for greater access to CBTS. The recommendations for practice based on the findings will lead to advancements in transition practices that support increased access to positive employment outcomes and postsecondary outcomes for youth with ID/A. Identifying the Presence of Research-Based Predictors in Transition Experiences of Students With Intellectual Disability Using NLTS 2012 In this session, Clare Papay and Meg Grigal share findings from a study that analyzed data from the National Longitudinal Transition Study 2012 to determine if youth with ID/A are receiving transition services that are aligned with research-based and promising predictors of post-school success as identified by Test et al. (2009) and Mazzotti et al. (2016). This study provides contemporary information on the extent to which youth with ID/A in high school experience research-based services and activities in secondary transition, and results will provide useful and actionable strategies for knowledge translation to improve policies, programs, and practices in secondary transition. Preparing Students With Disabilities for College: Recommendations for Educators and Families How can educators and families better support students with disabilities to begin their college journey ready for success? This presentation by Meg Grigal and Clare Papay at the CEC 2021 conference describes how to support high school students with disabilities to cultivate foundational skills; access needed academic supports; and develop 21st century skills using technology for communication, navigation, and social connections.
