In 2021-2022, nearly 500 individuals with intellectual disability had the opportunity to pursue higher education through 35 Transition and Postsecondary Programs for Students with Intellectual Disabilities (TPSIDs) across the United States. These TPSID programs were part of 22 model demonstration projects and were funded by the U.S. Department of Education's Office of Postsecondary Education. And that's not all: 3 more TPSID programs are currently in the works, ensuring that more students with intellectual disability will have access to higher education in the future.
The National Coordinating Center provided crucial support to the TPSID programs by offering technical assistance and evaluation. And now, the Year 2 Annual Report (link) has arrived, providing us with insightful data on the 2021-2022 TPSID programs. The report covers a wide range of topics including program and student characteristics, academic access, course enrollments, employment activities, engagement in student life, outcomes for exiting students, and more!
The report revealed some exciting highlights that are worth noting. For instance, nearly all students (94%) in TPSID programs were able to take at least one academically inclusive course in the 2021-22 academic year. Additionally, more than half (59%) of the students were able to secure paid work during that same period. And for those students who completed a TPSID program in 2021-22, an impressive 99% earned a credential, with 70% of those credentials approved by their respective college or university.
These results are a testament to the commitment and dedication of TPSID programs to promote inclusivity and support for students with intellectual disability in higher education.
